Stravinsky L'Histoire du Soldat
Stravinsky's well-known suite for
chamber ensemble, speaker, and dancer is here transformed into a trio for three
players. It was written shortly after World War I - the composer imagined
a situation in which eight instrumentalists, three actors, and a dancer
might travel from village to village giving performances after the war's
devastation. The "story," about a soldier who sold his violin (his
soul) to the Devil, was concocted by conflating several different folk
tales.
In this shorter version, the witty modern parodies of marches, waltzes, a
ragtime and a tango conjure up an early 20th century world of spiky, jazzy
dissonance and toungue-in-cheek musical fury.
